For those of you thinking of applying for an Australian Partner Visa offshore (subclass 309 visa) – here are 3 tips to keep in mind.
At the time of writing this article, an offshore application is processed quicker than an application filed inside Australia. Offshore 309 applications are currently processed between 13 to 18 months on average, whereas onshore applications may take anywhere between 20 to 24 months. Keep in mind, this is a general guidance, and your case may be processed faster or slower, depending on the circumstances.
There are 2 issues in relation to supporting evidence which we wanted to highlight. The first is that when you get supporting statements together, if you can’t find Australian citizens or permanent residents, you can ask your friends or family in your country to write supporting statements. If your application was lodged inside Australia, you would have to find Australian citizens or PRs.
The other issue is that you should remember that all your documents need to be translated to English. While this might sound obvious, but if you apply from a non-English speaking country, most of your documents may be in a language other than English. For example, your lease agreement, bank statement, utility bills etc may all need to be translated. This means there are added costs, and the process might take a little longer.
Can you apply for a visitor visa?
Once you have lodged your offshore Partner Visa application, you can come to Australia on a visitor visa. Not everyone will need this, but if your partner is residing in Australia, then you would obviously want to see him or her and spend some time together. Nothing stops you from applying for a visitor visa to temporarily come to Australia while your partner visa application is pending. The only thing that might stop you is if there is a re-entry ban against you (probably because you had overstayed a visa in the past). If this is your situation, check out this article which may help you.
